How to Deal with Unsupportive Friends and Family
(1) Don’t Argue
Often times when your friends and family don’t support your new business, it is NOT because they don’t believe in you.
Rather, most often, it is because they are worried about you or they are just trying to “protect” you.
NEW BUSINESS IS “RISKY”
Chances are that they think starting and building a business is “risky”.
Well, it is true that about 50% of all new businesses fail within the first 5 years (although of course, there are many advantages of starting and building a business).

The truth is, the idea of entrepreneurship can be overwhelming to someone who has no experience with it. They just lack understanding.
So if this happens to you, here is what you can do.
If They Don’t Live With You
If you are not living under the same roof with them – you can try to explain your perspectives and hope for their understanding.
Listen to their concerns but don’t feel discouraged or disheartened.
If they still do not support you or if they want to convince you not to start your business, then it may be better off for you to say nothing more and to keep a distance from them for the time being.
By NOT going into arguments with them, you protect your relationship and leave the door open for more positive discussions as your business progresses.
For me, I understand my WHY and my vision, and I would rather choose not to spend my time or energy defending myself to people who do not support me.
If They Live With You
Now, if you are living under the same roof – then it is a little more difficult to deal with. However, remember, don’t start a war with them!
Thank them for their concerns and comments, but let them know that it is important for you to at least give your entrepreneurial dreams a try.
Why? Because you don’t want to live your life with regrets.
That’s all – state your points but don’t argue.
The last thing you want is to ruin your relationship and to make the whole situation really stressful for everyone.
Starting a new business can already be stressful, so keep your cool and focus your energy and time on building your business instead.
Don’t need to seek approval
Some of your unsupportive friends and family will get it over time.
However, sadly, some may never get it and you will have to be OK with that too. After all, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
Remember, there will be other people who will get it and support you along the way!
You don’t need to seek approval from everyone in your life.
There is nothing worse than getting in your head over someone who criticizes or devalues your dreams.
These are YOUR dreams, and you need to protect them!
Remember, you only live once and life is NOT a dress rehearsal.
The only way to show the world who you really are is to live your life fully and fulfill your dreams.
(2) Remember Your WHY and Believe In Yourself
Your WHY
Remember WHY you wanted to start your business!
There must be particular reasons WHY you wanted to take the leap into entrepreneurship. So, remember those reasons!
Your WHY is your fuel and your juice for your entrepreneurial journey. It is your WHY that drives you and gives you the power to drive forward.
I highly recommend you to read the International Bestselling book Start With Why by Simon Sinek.
Alternatively, you can listen to my YouTube Audiobook on How To Find Your Why.
The bigger your WHY, the easier the HOW.
Believe In Yourself
Often when we are fixed on those who do not understand or support our dreams, it is simply a reflection of us not believing in ourselves enough.
When we believe in ourselves and our vision of our business, we will notice WAY less on who doesn’t support us.
Why? Because chances are that you are too busy building your business that you don’t even have time for noticing unsupportive people!
At the end of the day… Only YOU need to get it.
That’s it. YOU.
You need to get it for yourself. Embrace your dreams and believe in yourself. YOU need to support yourself, love yourself, and believe in the power of your own dreams and vision!
When that becomes 1000 percent true for you, and you show your belief in your words and in your actions, you will be amazed that people around you will start to believe in you too.
When you support yourself in a BIGGER way – the World will reflect that right back at you.
So believe in yourself and keep going after your dreams ladies!
(3) Be Careful With Who You Are Listening To
If you want to fly a plane, would you listen to someone who has never flown one before?
If you want to lose weight, would you listen to someone who is overweight?
How about investing? Would you listen to investment advice from broke people?
My guess is that you would NOT, correct?
Be Careful
Then, why would you listen to someone who has not started/built a successful business and have the lifestyle that you want?
Only follow and listen to the advice of those who have the results that you want.
Remember, whoever you are listening to, you are buying into their lifestyle. Choose wisely.
(4) Surround Yourself With Those Who Lift You Higher
I make sure that I ALWAYS have a couple of places or people where I know I can go to and be supported.
Join an entrepreneur club (you can find some on Meetup), join a mastermind group, find a mentor, surround yourself with people who see your vision and supports your dreams.
Always stay close to the campfire!
Don’t let negative and toxic people rent space in your head. Raise the rent and kick them out!
Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher!
(5) Become Massively Successful!
Yup, that’s it.
Bravely go after your dreams and become massively successful.
Results speak louder than anything.
So be fully committed, take massive actions, and make your vision a reality!
To your dream stealers and those who were trying to trash your dreams, be so good that they cannot ignore you.
To those who love you – your results will show to them that you are committed to your vision and you are capable of succeeding in your dreams.
Even if their egos are too big to come back and let you know that they now support you (or may even be proud of you). At the minimum, you have proven to them that they no longer have to worry about you.
